UCSF Dermatopathology Service

We offer a full range of dermatopathology and oral pathology services to medical professionals around the world.  The majority of our referrals involve analysis of tissue and interpretation of slides, however, we offer a full range dermatopathology service, offering immunofluorescence and molecular testing, and special stains.

Every specimen that passes through our CLIA-certified lab is issued a diagnosis by one of our internationally recognized dermatopathologists or oral pathologists. All test results are timely and precise, no matter how routine or challenging the case may be.

Dr. Philip LeBoit, who trained under the late Dr. Bernard Ackerman, founded the UCSF Dermatopathology Service in 1987. His vision was clear: to merge expert diagnoses with superior customer service.

Dr. Timothy McCalmont joined the Service as Co-Director in 1991.  Together, Drs. LeBoit and McCalmont are widely recognized as two of the top physicians in their field.  They have served as editors and contributors to major medical journals, and have written and edited many books and articles. Both have received of a number of prestigious awards for professional excellence.

With the 1995 addition of Dr. Kari Connolly, the service expanded to include an immunofluorescence unit. A Molecular Lab was later added under the direction of Dr. Boris Bastian.

Drs. Thaddeus Mully, Laura Pincus, Jeffrey North, and Iwei Yeh all play integral roles in our day-to-day business. The service would not be complete without their individual contributions.

Each of our board-certified dermatopathologists and oral pathologists bring a unique background, talent, and expertise to our group. Click here to learn more.

Our mission is to deliver prompt, expert analysis and interpretation for referring physicians, to further knowledge in the microscopic and molecular aspects of skin disease and to apply advances to daily diagnostics.
