Background
Dr. Philip LeBoit founded the UCSF Dermatopathology Service in 1987. Dr. Timothy McCalmont joined the Service in 1991. As co-directors, Drs. LeBoit and McCalmont have earned a reputation for excellence and are recognized leaders in the field of dermatopathology.
In 1995, an immunofluorescence unit was added under the direction of Dr. McCalmont and Dr. Kari Connolly, who joined the Service as an immunodermatologist. Dr. Boris Bastian has been providing melanoma genomics analysis since 1990 and has recently joined the Service as a diagnostic dermatopathologist. Dr. Beth Ruben joined our Service in July 2004. She trained in dermatopathology at UCSF in 1996 and has been an academic and private practice dermatopathologist since 1997. Dr. Ruben is both a clinical dermatologist and a dermatopathologist who is an active member of a number of academic societies.
Mission
All of the physicians involved with the UCSF Dermatopathology Service are readily available to referring physicians for telephone consultation and discussion of results. Their mission is to provide prompt, expert interpretation and analysis for referring physicians who believe in superior diagnostics and patient care.
