Jeffrey P. North, MD

Managing Director & Professor of Pathology and Dermatology

After finishing undergraduate studies in molecular biology and chemistry at Brigham Young University, I attended medical school at UCSF from 2002-2006. As a first year medical student I began working on melanoma genetics with Boris Bastian, M.D. studying the evolution of melanoma on acral (hands/feet) skin. My interest in dermatology grew during my time at UCSF, leading to a dermatology residency at Oregon Health & Science University, where I served as chief resident from 2009-2010. I returned to UCSF for Dermatopathology fellowship in 2010, followed by a year on faculty as a clinical instructor. After one year on faculty at the University of Missouri as the director of dermatopathology, I rejoined the faculty on the UCSF Dermatopathology and Oral Pathology Service and am delighted to be a member of such an outstanding academic and clinical dermatology and dermatopathology unit.

My interests include increasing diagnostic precision in both inflammatory and neoplastic dermatologic conditions. This includes utilizing molecular techniques such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) to better characterize histopathologically ambiguous melanocytic tumors and provide better prognostic information for patients based on cancer-related changes in the tumor genome. I am also interested in immunoprofiling inflammatory skin diseases to allow for more precise diagnosis and understanding of these diseases. In addition, I enjoy teaching and mentoring students, residents and fellows rotating through our service.
