Dr. Philip LeBoit, who trained under the late Dr. Bernard Ackerman, founded the UCSF Dermatopathology Service in 1987. His vision was clear: to merge expert diagnoses with superior customer service. Dr. Timothy McCalmont joined the the Service in 1991, became Co-Director in 1994, and together they built UCSF Dermatopathology into a center of clinical excellence, innovative research, education, and academic leadership.

Our molecular lab is directed by world renowned melanoma researcher Dr. Boris Bastian and facilitates in depth assessment of tumors at the genomic level. UCSF connective tissue disease expert Dr. Kari Connolly oversees our immunofluorescence unit with over 25 years of experience in the field. Drs. Thaddeus Mully, Jeffrey North, Laura Pincus, Michael Tetzlaff, and Iwei Yeh all play integral roles in lab leadership, resident/fellow education, and clinical service.

In 2013, with the merger of UCSF Dermatopathology and UCSF Oral Pathology, our services expanded to include oral & maxillofacial pathology. Dr. Richard Jordan is an internationally recognized diagnostic pathologist with almost 30 years of experience in the field. Boarded in both oral & maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine, he has particular expertise in the diagnosis of salivary gland and odontogenic tumors in addition to a keen interest in the diagnosis of soft tissue and bone pathology.

Each of our board-certified dermatopathologists and oral pathologists bring a unique background, talent, and expertise to our group. They serve as editors and contributors to major medical journals, serve in leadership positions in dermatology and pathology societies, and are frequent speakers at national and international dermatology and pathology meetings. They have written and edited hundreds of scientific articles and textbooks, have received a number of prestigious awards for professional excellence, and are widely regarded as top physicians in their respective fields.
